SDR inspection compulsory for certain animals

In order to protect the ecosystems of islands as yet free from certain diseases or parasites, for some species, your animal will need to be inspected by the Rural Development Department (SDR) and obtain a certificate allowing the animal to travel.

This provision concerns:

  • Birds belonging to the Psittacidae family (such as parakeets, lovebirds...), to the waterfowl (swans), and  Columbidae (pigeons, doves...)
  • Bees for transport from Tahiti, Moorea, Huahine, Raivavae and Tubuai to others islands
  • Micro-wasps
  • Their container must be closed so that they cannot get out during transport.
  • Since this process may take time, you are advised to apply well in advance.
  • Dogs, cats, rabbits, roosters, hens, chicks, fish, etc ... are not subject by this measure.

  Report your animal

  • Animals must be included in your booking, whether they are travelling in the hold or cabin.
  • Dogs and cats over 4 months old must be identified with a microchip or tattoo carried out by a vet.

Container characteristics:

  • Your animal must be carried in a container approved for air transport.
  • Ventilation via holes, grille or openwork (without allowing the animal to bite or nip through the opening).
  • Watertight bottom with litter or other material for absorbing liquid excrement.
  • Approved materials: plastic, metal or wood.
  • The container must be locked if the animal is travelling in the hold.
  • The container must be clean.
  • The animal must be able to lie down, stand up or turn around without getting hurt.

  Animals in the cabin

  • Certain animals (dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, freshwater fishes and freshwater turtles) are accepted in the cabin, in ATR aircraft only
  • For the comfort of all passengers, birds, cocks, chickens and chicks must travel in the hold.
  • The animal must travel in a container which meets the criteria listed above.
  • Maximum authorized dimensions for the container: 45 x 35 x 20 (17.71 x 13.77 x 7.87)
  • Maximum authorized weight for the container and the animal:
    • 8 kg (17 lb) on all ATR flights
  • Carriage of an animal in the cabin on Beechcraft is subject to the approval of the captain.
  • Only adults are permitted to travel with animals in the cabin.
  • The animal must be kept in its container from the check-in counter to the baggage reclaim area. The animal must not be able to move around freely. In the event of any inconvenience, it may be stowed in the hold, at the captain's decision.
  • To ensure your animal has a smooth journey, we recommend, on your vet's advice, administering a sedative to avoid any reaction during the flight.
  • The cost of transporting an animal in the cabin is XPF 2 000.
  • On Twin Otter, no pets are allowed in the cabin.

Special cases:

    • Animals weighing more than 50 kg (110 lb) require special handling. Read the conditions of their acceptance.
