Sports equipment and special bagages

Equipements sportifs et bagages spéciaux - Titre et contenu

Air Tahiti operates low-capacity aircraft. The holds are smaller than those of aircraft used for international flights and baggage is not containerised. As a result, sports equipment and special baggage (heavy, bulky, etc.) requires special handling.

If you exceed the allowance permitted in weight or number, you will have to pay an excess baggage and this will be accepted according to the availability of the flight.

Baggage must be checked in with Air Tahiti Freight Service if:

  • They exceed the authorized dimensions (wheels and handles included): length + width + height > 150 cm (59 in)
  • They weigh more than 32 kg (71 lb)

  • You can take your sports equipment as part of your baggage allowance. In most cases, it will be "allowed with limited release".
  • Some of the sports equipment listed below requires special transport conditions. Select your sport to find out more.
  • This equipment can be carried in the same baggage as your other effects or separately.
  • To ensure your diving torch is transported safely, you must carry the bulb or the batteries separately.
  • Diving knives and other sharp instruments must be packed in your hold baggage.
  • Compressed air bottles may be accepted as hold baggage provided they are empty and meet the check-in conditions for hold baggage.
  • Full or empty oxygen bottles must be checked in with our Cargo Service.
  • Given the fragility of this type of baggage, we advise you to pack it in a hard case.
  • Spear guns must be unloaded before being checked in.

Surfboards, kitesurfing boards, bodyboards, etc.:

  • do not exceeding 1.80 m (70 in) in length: are accepted subject to available space on the flight.
  • exceeding 1.80 m (70 in): cannot be accepted on Air Tahiti flights because our aircraft's hold size limits the volume of baggage we are able to carry.

Bicycles may be accepted as hold baggage, subject to available hold space on your flight.

We would ask you to :

  • pack your bicycle in a sufficiently rigid container to protect it
  • remove the wheels and attach them to either side of the frame
  • position and fix the handlebars parallel to the frame
  • remove the pedals or turn them inwards

Electric bikes are prohibited in hold baggage. They must be registered as Freight.

Firearms used for hunting or sport and their ammunition may be packed in your hold baggage, subject to special conditions.

 Special baggage

Given the value and fragility of this type of baggage, we advise you to :

Does your health condition require you to take special equipment with you? For peace of mind on your journey, read the conditions of acceptance of medical equipment. If it is not listed, please ask one of our agents.

  •  Plants and plant products may be accepted on our flights.
  • They will be transported in the hold or cabin as part of your baggage allowance.
  • If they are transported in the hold, they will be "allowed with limited release".
  • If you exceed your baggage allowance in weight or number of pieces, your excess baggage will be accepted on your flight on a space-available basis and will be subject to payment of the applicable fee.
  • Given their fragility, we advise you to pack your plants or plant products in rigid, watertight packaging to protect them.
  • For departures from Tahiti to all islands, all plants and plant products are subject to phytosanitary control.
  • For departures from islands other than Tahiti, please contact the Rural Development Department (Service du Développement Rural).
  • You will carry with you a wedding dress or tuxedo. Please notify us at the booking stage.
  • We recommend that you place your dress/tuxedo in a protective cover. Among other features, we advise you to choose a waterproof and tear resistant cover.
  • Based on availability on your flight, we will carry your dress or tuxedo as cabin baggage. Our aircraft do not have closet, we will ask you to roll your dress/tuxedo to place it in the baggage compartment, above the other luggage.
  • Air Tahiti operating aircraft of small capacity, the size of our cabin and luggage racks does not allow us to accept large dresses/tuxedos. So, they might be transported in hold, which is not containerized.
  • You can carry your dress or tuxedo as part of your baggage allowance. If you exceed your baggage allowance, your excess baggage will be accepted on your flight on a space-available basis and will be subject to payment of the applicable fee.
  • In most cases, your dress or tuxedo will be "allowed with limited release".

Honey, royal jelly, propolis, pollen collected by bees, beeswax and used beekeeping equipment are subject to the Rural Development Department (SDR) authorization from Tahiti, Moorea, Huahine, Raivavae and Tubuai to the other islands of French Polynesia.
