Hao

Find your flight to Hao with Air Tahiti and visit this atoll in the Tuamotu archipelago, 920 km east of Tahiti.

With your flight ticket to Hao, you're about to visit this low-lying island, also known as "l'île de l'Arc" or "l'île de la Harpe". Its lagoon, one of the largest in Polynesia, stretches 55 km from north-west to south-east over an area of 892 km²... an underwater domain offering divers a wealth of riches unknown to the terrestrial world! A unique pass opens up the lagoon to the ocean, the Kaki Pass.

Molluscs, starfish, sea urchins and crustaceans find shelter in the many nooks and crannies of the coral reef, frequented by dolphinfish and silver jacks. These passing guests rub shoulders with the lagoon's regulars (triggerfish, surgeonfish, parrots) in a magnificent mineral setting.

Approached by the Spanish navigator Pedro Fernandez de Quirós in 1606, it was not revisited by European explorers until 162 years later, most notably by Bougainville in 1768, who named it "Ile de la Harpe" because of its configuration. James Cook landed there the following year and named it "Bow Island" for the same reason.

The atoll's main village, Otepa, located on the northern islet 3.5 km from the airfield, has a population of around 1,027.

Hao is the administrative centre of the municipality of the same name and also includes the atolls of Amanu, Reka Reka, Nengo Nengo, Manuhangi, Paraoa, Tauere, Ahunui, Hereheretue, Anuanuraro, Anuanurunga and Nukutepipi.

Makemo

Find your flight to Makemo with Air Tahiti and discover this island, located 500km east of Tahiti.

When you buy your flight ticket for Makemo, you're about to visit the third largest atoll in the Tuamotu Islands in terms of the size of its lagoon: it varies in width from just 5 to 8 km, but stretches 65 km from north-west to south-east. Makemo is nevertheless blessed with many assets: superb seabeds renowned for the diversity and richness of their underwater fauna, countless totally unspoilt "motu" of fine sand, the peaceful village of Pouheva with its immaculate white church and the mysterious "ghost village" of Punaruku, deserted a long time ago. The atoll's inhabitants make their living from fishing, copra and pearl farming. In recent years, Makemo has developed mainly as a commercial and administrative centre, as it is the administrative centre of a commune comprising 11 atolls.

It is also a place steeped in history and legend. It was once home to the hero Moeava, a famous warrior who performed many feats in the Tuamotu archipelago. It is also said that mermaids, known as "Mokorea", took up residence on a "motu", near a large natural freshwater pool, which can be visited.

If you're looking for a flight to Makemo, we recommend you take a look at our offers.

Mangareva

Find your flight to Mangareva with Air Tahiti and get ready to take off for this island in the Gambiers, 1700 km from Tahiti, with a cooler climate than elsewhere and a diversity of landscapes.

With your flight ticket to Mangareva, the main island, you will discover a destination that features some of Polynesia's most beautiful religious buildings (churches, convent, etc.), which it owes to Father Honoré Laval, who established a veritable theocracy here from 1834 to 1871, wiping the slate clean of the ancient civilisation that has since fallen into oblivion. St Michael's Cathedral is undoubtedly well worth a visit, while the climb up Mount Duff offers superb panoramic views, and the boat trip is an excursion not to be missed under any circumstances. The pearl industry, which has undergone significant development, is one of the archipelago's jewels and the Mangarevians are rightly proud of the beauty of their pearls, with their exceptional colours.

Rikitea, the main village, is a peaceful place where houses embellished with flower gardens line a single street.

The Gambier archipelago is well worth a visit for its many possibilities for visits and excursions. A journey to a fascinating place of beauty and history, at the end of the world. There is a 1-hour time difference between the Gambiers and Tahiti.
