Flights to Anaa
Find your flight to Anaa with Air Tahiti and discover this atoll located 377 km east of Tahiti.
With your flight ticket to Anaa, you're about to be dazzled by this island, renowned for its spectacularly colored lagoon: the light greens and blues are so luminous, they reflect in the clouds and served as a landmark for Polynesian navigators of the past and still today. This incomparable color comes from the fact that the lagoon, covering almost 90 km2, combines a white sandy bottom with shallow waters (no more than 8 meters deep). The crystal-clear waters are perfect for swimming and lounging among the stunning purple-colored fish and coral. Angling and fly-fishing enthusiasts can also enjoy this activity! The white sandy beaches stretch as far as the eye can see, and forests of feo, fossilized coral, 3 meters high, emerge along the coastline, almost around the entire perimeter of the atoll, offering a fantastic, almost unreal landscape...
« Welcome to Anaa, where the clouds are green and the lagoon is beautiful! ». Such is the inscription on a small sign not far from the airstripe. A long time ago it was the cradle of the Pomare family in the 19th century. Anaa was known for the bravery of its warriors, nicknamed the Parata, after the sharks of the same name. They invaded neighboring atolls and imposed their authority over 38 Tuamotu islands, almost half of the archipelago.
Anaa was first sighted by Pedro Fernandes de Queirós in 1606, a Portuguese explorer in the service of Spanish royalty, but it was French navigator Louis Antoine de Bougainville who first landed there in 1768. James Cook succeeded him the following year, on April 8, 1769.
In the 19th century, Anaa became a French territory, developing large-scale coconut oil production. At the time, it was the highest populated atoll in the archipelago, with almost 2,000 inhabitants. An atoll raised in geological times, with a height of almost 5 meters, it has the distinction of having the largest surface area of emerged land (37km2) after Rangiroa, giving it a great wealth of soil and plant species.
Today, Anaa's main village is Tukuhora, located in the northeast of the atoll and inhabited by around 500 people who make their living from coconut farming, fishing and a bit of tourism. There are also a number of old villages, now uninhabited, with numerous remains that can be visited: Temarie (to the north), Otepipi (to the west), Putuahara also known as Mania (to the south-west) and Tematahoa (to the south-east).
The inhabitants of Anaa are experts at pati'a fa, a javelin throw aimed at a coconut stuck on a pole 7.50 m high. Almost every year, they win the major Heiva competitions held in Tahiti.
