Makemo is nevertheless blessed with many assets: superb seabeds renowned for the diversity and richness of their underwater fauna, countless totally unspoilt "motu" of fine sand, the peaceful village of Pouheva with its immaculate white church and the mysterious "ghost village" of Punaruku, deserted a long time ago. The atoll's inhabitants make their living from fishing, copra and pearl farming. In recent years, Makemo has developed mainly as a commercial and administrative centre, as it is the administrative centre of a commune comprising 11 atolls.
It is also a place steeped in history and legend. It was once home to the hero Moeava, a famous warrior who performed many feats in the Tuamotu archipelago. It is also said that mermaids, known as "Mokorea", took up residence on a "motu", near a large natural freshwater pool, which can be visited.
